The Door in the Dark: Selected Works from the Cunningham Dax Collection

RMIT Gallery

3 September – 19 October 2013

Co-curated with Suzanne Davies, Director RMIT Gallery and Vanessa Gerrans, Exhibitions Coordinator RMIT Gallery

We all have an inner life, a quiet and evocative space where we visualise our dreams and concerns. This exhibition coincided with Mental Health Week and was an invitation to reflect on our inner lives and the secret visual images we hold close to our thoughts. The Cunningham Dax Collection, housed at The Dax Centre, comprises over 15,000 artworks made by people who have an experience of mental illness and psychological trauma.

In going from room to room in the dark,

I reached out blindly to save my face,

But neglected, however lightly, to lace

My fingers and close my arms in an arc.

A slim door got in past my guard,

And hit me a blow in the head so hard

I had my native simile jarred.

So people and things don't pair any more

With what they used to pair with before.

Robert Frost, The Door in the Dark, 1928
